pointequesta asked: FAFSA WONT GIVE ME MONEY. SCHOLARSHIPS HAVENT EITHER. I CANT AFFORD MY DREAM SCHOOL. My options seem bleak and my parents almost don't care. I will continually look for more scholarships but that season is almost over. I am not 18 yet so my parents would have to take out a student loan for me, but they owe over 80,000 for my moms recent phd and now they aren't being granted more loan. For me. I'm thinking I'll have to emancipate myself to be an adult and ask for a loan!? Help. Bleak.
Ahem, FAFSA always offers everyone money. Unless you aren’t a US citizen or eligible non-citizen, you should at least receive the offer of unsubsidized stafford loans. That student loan is taken out in your name.
So you know, emancipating yourself isn’t easy, either. But if you’re curious how that works, here’s the simplified version by WikiHow, and here’s the legal website that can tell you how emancipation works in your state. Be aware that anything involving legal paperwork usually means you need a lawyer, and those are not free.
Have you bothered talking to this school’s financial aid office at all? They may have some school-specific answers for you, but be prepared to not be happy with what you hear. Schools aren’t going to bend over backwards financially to get you to go there.
Here’s the thing I love/hate/love telling people: YOUR “DREAM SCHOOL” IS NOT ALWAYS THE SCHOOL YOU END UP GOING TO!! That’s why counselors/teachers/whoever tell you to apply to more than one school. The two most important factors in choosing a school that’s the right fit are:
- Academic match
- FINANCIAL MATCH
So if you can’t match both of those…find another school. I’m not fucking around. Look at your options. Are there other colleges/universities you were accepted to that are more affordable? Could you start at community college and then transfer to your “dream school” later?
Seriously, kids. Stop fucking acting like it’s the end of the goddamn world because you can’t afford your “dream school.” Dreams are nice and all, but you need to be realistic. Viable options are all around you.
